"Unlike anything ever before!" - Teller of Penn & Teller.
Back by popular demand, The Wake: Step Beyond the Veil, a site specific immersive magic & music experience, returns to Black Squirrel Club for one night only. Have you wanted to know what it was like to attend your own funeral? Or what it would be like to mourn someone as they stood in the room and watched? Come along with the Director, the Spiritualist, and the Orator as you navigate the Deceased brain’s final firings.
Read below for a taste of what's in store (or don't - the choices start here)...
You step inside an old steam plant in the Fishtown section of Philadelphia. The room is filled with pews and flooded by yellowed light from the myriad of humongous chandeliers littering the high ceiling. The Director here at Graboli's Funeral Practice greets you with the guest book and a funeral chip to mark your time at The Wake. Your evening celebrating the life of the lucky Deceased begins with beautiful music pouring from the Orator and filling the room. The Spiritualist may find you and offer you comfort or answers with her tarot cards, depending on what you seek in your time of need.
The veil slides back as the Ceremony begins and the sound of brooding accordion fills the room louder still. You are compelled towards the sound only to be greeted by The Attendant, whose aim is to elevate your experience with us here at Graboli's. We begin as the Deceased is revealed to us all, even themselves. Not an actor but a regular person - one just like you - only they are gifted this evening with the hope of transition from this realm into the next. As electrical impulses continue beyond heart beats, will anyone ever truly cross over or are we stuck in the seemingly eternal dream state of increasingly infinitesimal electric impulses?
Magic show? Seance? Concert? Play? Choose Your Own Adventure? Yes.
