Oliver Mayman Presents: The Tunes Session, An Open Jam Experiment On the Music of Irving Berlin
On April 10th, I will be hosting the very first “tunes session” at Black Squirrel Club, featuring the music of Irving Berlin. The house band will open with a few of his songs before opening the session up to guest musicians. We'll explore a list of quintessential Irving Berlin tunes (below). When we run out, it'll turn into a regular session. Whoever shows up and learns the tunes gets a shot at a gig with the next session's house band and the opportunity to pick the theme. If you like the idea and want to be a part of it, come out and play some of this music with us!
The goal of this experiment is for like-minded musicians to come together to learn some interesting tunes and expand everyone’s repertoire, all while getting some Philly musicians a Wednesday night gig! Be a part of it!
The Tunes List:
Blue Skies, How Deep is the Ocean, Cheek to Cheek, They Say It's Wonderful, All By Myself, What'll I Do, Let's Face the Music and Dance, Russian Lullaby, The Best Thing for You is Me, Change Partners, My Walking Stick, Choices (Barry Harris)
The first house band will be:
Jillian Ashcraft (vocals), Rockwell Valentine (trumpet), Andrew Long (saxophone), Oliver Mayman (vibraphone), Justin Sekelewski (violin), Steven Perry (drums)
