Elkhorn
Elkhorn, the psych-folk guitar duo of Drew Gardner (NYC) and Jesse Sheppard (Philly), is known
for the interaction of Sheppard’s earthy 12-string acoustic fingerpicking with Gardner’s
expansive multi-instrumentalist improvisation.
The band has put out thirteen albums since 2016, four of them released in 2024. Their first
three releases, Elkhorn, The Black River and Lionfish, saw the duo developing their unique and
expressive musical dialog. With the recording of the double album Sun Cycle, the duo expanded
to include Willie Lane on third guitar and Ryan Jewell on drums and tabla, starting what was to
be a series of collaborations with some of the scene’s most creative musicians. Long-time friend
Turner Williams joined Drew and Jesse on shahi baaja and electric bouzouki for their next two
long-form improvisational explorations, The Storm Sessions and The Acoustic Storm Sessions.
Next, the band went into the studio with drummers Ian McColm and Nate Scheible to create
the soaring landscapes of the Distances album. This double duo concept was in turn followed
by On The Whole Universe In All Directions, which saw Drew shift away from electric guitar to
play both vibraphone and drums. Post-lockdown, Mike Gangloff accompanied Elkhorn on fiddle
for their first live LP release, Shackamaxon Concert, and McColm joined up again for the fried
electric trio jams of Other Worlds. These partnerships were followed by the expansive world-
building of The Red Valley where Drew and Jesse multi-tracked a large array of instruments and
were joined by harpist Jesse Sparhawk. Over the past eight years Elkhorn has continued to tour
the East and West Coasts as well as the Midwest, including appearances at DebacleFest in
Seattle and The Milwaukee Psych Fest. For this evening's performance Elkhorn is accompanied
by long-time collaborator, Ian McColm on drums.
Elkhorn demonstrates again and again that there is no height they won’t scale, no direction
they won’t travel. Their music unfolds at its own unhurried yet boundary-pushing psychedelic
pace, freely mixing folk, blues, cosmic jazz and anything in between.
